Thank you Jan Miller (hope I got the name right) for speaking to Arlington City Council during the Yeandle drilling zone (13 more wells) SUP vote. I appreciate your concern about adjacent nature perserve and if wild life (and the public) could access the frack pond…of course council considers the pond an “amenity”…that fresh water frac pond isn’t so fresh being that Village Creek stuff….a real frack pond with toxins (produced water with hydrocarbons) does occur with EACH new well during the first stage of flowback when they allow the venting to take place through the OPEN hatches of those red frac tanks – they really should be making Chesapeake (Vantage owns this one though) flowback using the pressurized, VENTLESS urban flowback tanks.

The last chance the Yeandle site (7100 West I-20) has to stop all future drilling there is when the first well comes up for vote on this new SUP drilling zone. If they deny the first well, the others can’t happen, but I bet they can still keep bringing back a new request for that first well after a certain amount of time has passed. So this vote tonight was critical to not allow the SUP and that would have stopped the build out past those four existing wells already there-probably petering out by now.

Once they approve that first well on that new SUP drilling zone, then the remaining 12 wells will be administratively approved (unless they are out of compliance via the inspections).

The only future public comment allowed on the Yeandle site will be on the first well permit request, and later on if they want to expand the drilling zone for more wells.

The storage tanks holding the produced water has hydrocarbons that only an infrared camera can see (as pictured above in a related video) …. plant, animal and human life will be exposed to those emissions 24/7 and those emissions grow with each new well.

This is the video I took last Friday night at TGIFriday’s in striking up a casual conversation with an industry guy who has worked with Schlumberger and other companies.

After I turned off the camera, he told me of a sleep deprived episode where the uranium tool came out of the ground and he was looking at a “radiating in the open air” event…he said as long as the tool is in the ground, that the uranium is “contained”.

He agreed with me on his dislike for Chesapeake…he also informed me that Arlington has at least 7 housed Compressor Stations hidden nicely away in Walmart looking buildings. He was impressed with how much sound and aesthetics was important to Arlington (Gasland) Texas for those Compressor Stations.

In asking him about our dry gas, he said it was not so dry at around 1,100 btu which means there are other hydrocarbons present that are heavier than methane.

So I will contact this blogger, William Huston, who has an interest and once blogged “Finally! Proof of the use Depleted Uranium in fracking perf-guns”.

Mr Lewis, as an alumni and an air quality stakeholder in the area, I follow the progress of the equipment on campus and noticed an update on 1/13/2013 that an electric compressor station was added to increase production.

Do you also have an update to the amount of royalties paid to the university or have a break down that is available to the public? I am trying to ascertain if the compressor station is performing as intended.

Please advise how to get more financial information on how the university is “currently” enjoying royalties, thank you.

Also I saw an ad in Craigs list earlier this year for an on-campus job to oversee the battery of storage tanks. Do you also have information on what drove the creation of this position?

There was activity in February see attached photo-do you know if they were replacing casings? If so which wells did that occur on so I can track if this assited in production as well?

To the University Community:

I am pleased to provide you with an update on recent progress and future activity at the natural gas site at UT Arlington.

In early August, Carrizo Oil & Gas began the well completion phase at the site located at the southeast corner of our campus. This phase included the process of fracturing, or “fracing,” which stimulates the gas flow to the surface. Thanks to excellent weather and to Carrizo’s diligence, the “fracing” process was completed last Thursday — ahead of schedule. Most additional activity and truck traffic associated with this process has already subsided.

The well completion phase is almost complete, and we anticipate that natural gas will be flowing soon. As outlined in previous communications, the final activity associated with the well completion phase includes the process of flowback and flaring. During the flowback process, water used for the fracing is extracted from the wells and transported off-site, and the natural gas released during fracing begins to flow to the surface.

As the natural gas reaches the surface, each well goes through a controlled procedure called flaring. This routine process typically takes about 24 to 48 hours per well, and we expect the entire flaring process for the six wells to take from two to five days to complete. Flaring will begin this Saturday, September 20. During this time, Carrizo has advised us that it is likely that a flame from the apparatus inside the well site might be visible from outside the well site. This is standard practice within the natural gas industry and is entirely normal and safe. As part of Carrizo’s emergency preparedness plan, the company’s highly skilled and trained staff will coordinate the flaring operation with the Arlington Fire Department.

As soon as the well completion phase is finished, Carrizo will begin the production and transportation phase, which is the final step in the development process. During this phase, gas is extracted from the wells and delivered via pipelines to market. Carrizo has developed an innovative plan — believed to be unique in Tarrant County and in accordance with existing local city laws — in cooperation with a local pipeline company to utilize existing utility routes that already contain similar equipment and infrastructure. This has reduced the need to construct pipelines on private property and is making the process of getting gas from the wells to market much more efficient.

Following the production and transportation phase, a small compressor station will be constructed to serve Carrizo and other companies, if needed. UT Arlington is requiring that sound from the compressor station not exceed existing levels of ambient sound levels in the area (typical sound levels calculated before this facility is installed). This requirement is more restrictive than the noise standards established by City of Arlington ordinances. To help control levels of sound at the source, the compressor station will be powered by an electric motor, which is believed to be the first such station in the Barnett Shale. The compressor station will be a compact facility enclosed by a brick wall, and the entire site will be landscaped once the facility is complete.

I have emails out to Councilman Parker and Councilwoman Wolff regarding the need for information to be accessible on the 911 incidents occurring at these drill sites. It would also be advisable for our inspectors to follow up with posting the TCEQ or RRC results of their investigations on the City Gas Well Website too.

While our gaswell website has access to the city permit information, maps, and inspection reports…I find the site is virtually useless in getting helpful information about time frames of the activity at the sites and what type of pollution, odor, spill, or sound event that occurred at the site.

This type of information is what the citizens deserve in being made to co-exist with industrial operations in their neighborhoods and near their schools. In the spirit of transparency this is what the city should strive for.

I have also been quoted a $25 Open Records Fee for a list of the gas leak incident reports for a two year period. This is why I am re-requesting that this info be posted for ALL Arlington citizens.

PS I have not received a response from the 911 Response Gaswell Lead, Jay White, on this email below when the Entertainment District was inundated with Chesapeake foul odors which came into my home (and note that my windows were NOT opened).

The TCEQ report on that odor event says that they were retrieving/pulling up equipment out of the 1H Bobcat well.

I emailed the city and posted on the internet IN ADVANCE about taking protective measures to contact Chesapeake to not have the well sour or have stale odors for this drillsite in our Entertainment District.

Jay Doegey, how do I address on a legal basis for neglect and zero response to my concerns for public safety?

Jay White and Jessica Minley, why are there no field notes on the Bruder Gas Release? There were field notes available through Open Records for the odor event at the Truman/Cowboys Stadium.

I would like to remind you that the fourth well at the Truman/Cowboys Stadium drillsite by my home has yet to be fracked and flowed back. I expect the city to MAKE them use Best Available Control Technologies to…

1) Use non-diesel fuel to power frack compressors and engines

2) Use mitigation devices to capture the flying silica dust

3) Flowback immediately (so the well doesn’t sour or become stale) and to use pressurized, ventless, flowback tanks.

I have sick family members and pet…I have been begging for your assistance and pray for you to come to our aid to minimize the emissions on finishing that 4th gaswell near my family.

These Open Records Charges are hitting our pocketbook at a time when we are trying to pay for my husbands cancer treatments and other hospital bills for my teenager who recently had a longboard accident on an Arlington street while trying to avoid a car, but alas thats a Parks Department failure that I’ve been asking them to address and for another blog post.

Besides what has been written in the dispatch report that I just did an Open Records request on, I am hoping to find out more from you because Randy only had limited information that didn’t answer the questions I had such as..

1) what (equipment) did AFD use to air test -he mentioned a pyrometric tube that sucked in air sample(s), but admitted it was not like the pricey spectrometer I mentioned to him that can speciate on the spot what the effluents were….FYI I have been requesting council budget for this numerous times over the last three years ever since I read the press release http://governor.state.tx.us/news/press-release/14315/

Jared Wessel, lead Barnett Shale TCEQ rep and I spoke a while back about the possibility of AFD having these on their trucks, but Chief Crowson calls that suma canister deployment (just turn a valve) a “house keeping function”, and not his department’s responsibility to be able to take a sample before TCEQ can arrive.

3) were any chemicals were used during this workover that could have accounted for the odors-specifically I was hoping that someone was prepared to specifically test for the presence of hydrochloric acid because it is one of the main chemicals used after drilling and before fracturing. I read that it has a pungent, irritating odor and has an odor threshold of 7mg/m3 that I converted to be at approx. 5ppm…so if we could smell it, then it was at least at 5 ppm…the MSDS sheet herehttp://www.chem.tamu.edu/class/majors/msdsfiles/msdshcl.htm says that

4) What MSDS sheets for hydrochloric acid (or any other sheets) was given to your dept. or are kept on hand at the site for this work over phase? I really am fearful to personally go over there and view them myself.

The workover rig came down right away after all this drama yesterday….I’m curious to learn if hydrochloric acid is used in the early workover phase or on the last two days before the workover rig comes down….I would have never dreamed I’d yearn to learn about mining for fossil fuels to such detail…but such is my calling-I hope you understand my plight to fight to make sure they are drilling right…darn-there I go rhyming again…I just want to get back to my music and never signed up to baby sit the drillers and be a guinea pig in co-existing near urban drilling.

I breathed that cat urine like, eye burning odor for a few hours on Jan 30th starting from about 8:am ish. My mother-in-law noticed it first before it got stronger. I turned off my central unit and had to open a window it was so strong….originally I though a cat crawled up under my 100 year old home or was spraying near my air intake unit. When I was driving on Collins south to the intersection of Division street yesterday around noon, I was hit with that same identical odor again which gave me a temporary headache and fast beating heart (from the stress?) Subject: MSD verses EPA Brownfields grant money

I noticed the wording on the city blog where the EPA awarded Arlington $400K where it states “…the City connects property owners or developers to much-needed capital to make sure the site is properly assessed for contaminants and, if necessary, create a cleanup plan.” (I boldfaced for emphasis)

I have seen our City Council vote to allow Municipal Setting Designations for known ground water pollution be excused by the state TCEQ from ever cleaning up their mess in the name of **developing the property for an economic benefit rather than MAKING the owners or the prior owners clean it up.

This has the appearance of Arlington officials caring about Brownfields clean up ONLY if its on the government’s dime?

I wonder why the city care$ now ? especially when the gas wells in urban areas may need that money in the future as indicated on the above photo here.

I first learned about and blogged on our MSD program when the MSD12-1 about 600 feet from my house was approved by our City Council.

Is it just a coincidence that husband has cancer?

Is it also a coincidence that my teen’s medical testing is abnormal (he has high Vanillylmandelic Acid levels, & low Absolute Lymphocytes).

I wonder if our health issues (yeah me, my other son, and my bird all have asthma) may be related to living near drilling by the Cowboy’s Stadium two blocks from our home, if its been a longer term exposure of being downwind from the UTA and GM gas wells, or if its been a chronic exposure of living downwind to GM all these years?

Naturally I blame everything on (unproven safe) Urban Drilling, but I thought I’d give some credit to the toxic General Motors down the street, and to our long gone, dirty ol’ old gasoline stations that our leadership seems to flip flop about cleaning up as long as its either making them money or not costing them money.

Has the thought ever crossed your mind that the FBI needs to investigate eco-terrorism by our elected officials?

City of Arlington Deputy City Manager Bob Byrd came before (Pantego) Council to present Arlington’s position on MSDs. Mr Byrd stated that the City of Arlington feels that approving the MSDs are beneficial to economic development. He stated that the MSDs that have come before Arlington’s Council previously for approval have had exhaustive research performed on the ground in the vicinity of each location and each underground plume is well documented. The City of Arlington agrees that leaving pollution sitting underground is undeserible but they would rather see developed property than empty fields.“

Charlie, as you may know by now my family is paying medical bills for my husband’s cancer treatments.

I did an open records request for 2011 and 2012 gaswell related dispatch records from the fire department because Sargent Crowsen was quoted as appearing in Austin saying that already this year we’ve had 20 dispatch calls to the padsites.

As this industry taxes our airshed, defaces our town, taxes our ER resources, as a concerned City Council member, could you on my behalf do a full inquisition and post these on your webpage or email them to me so that I can make this public info?

People deserve to understand how being industrialized brings risks to their neighborhoods and to have 2006-current database accessible will give us a better understanding of the type of calls that may not as bad as the almost worst case scenarios like gaswell releases (with explosions and uncontrolled wells needing Boot and Coots being the actual worst case).

Then there are the slow bullet non-dispatch events with continuous storage tank releases that can be making people sick that will never be on record which by the time we tally any uptick in cancers compared to non-industrialized towns would be too late for us here anyway.

YEAH BABY! $52K Babysitting Toxic Storage Tanks at University of Texas at Arlington

HEY $52K yr babysitting these University of Texas at Arlington Carrizo storage tanks (see Craigs List posting below).

Since the air monitor that I’ve been monitoring went online, I’ve been emailing TCEQ, UTA, Carrizo, and Arlington officials and making a bunch of noise about old Benzene (see his Face Book page) being uncontrolled on campus.

It came to a head at year end when I called 911 because the BTEX (which includes Benzene) air monitor readings were spiking insanely. But the fire truck ended up at my house and not at the facility where the problem was allegedly occurring.

Heres my “Feil” home video of “Failed” dispatch…..

Sadly through open records, I ascertained that they also “failed” to follow up with a dispatch to the pad site at midnight on New Years Eve as requested. At that time, TCEQ was still investigating as to why the possibly explosive readings were occurring. I was concerned if any illegal fireworks were to occur near that area.

I hope the applicant for this job (as described below) was aware of what they WON’T be seeing, but that they WILL be breathing.

Here is a related video shown through the lens of an infrared camera that detects invisible emissions. At the end of the video, you can see a worker with a (measuring?) stick tending to the tank battery. Those produced water storage tanks are emitting more than just steam and water which is what misguided industry folks try to tell us it is.

Hydrocarbon vapor exposures are not what the parents of UTA students are paying for their students to receive. So…clap, clap, clap… t h a n k y o u. I’m still unclear as to who is paying for this position…I believe it is UTA. They got themselves into this mess. I bet that in the longterm, UTArlington will be paying a whole lot more in PR costs if any (more) spills or emission events or worse happens.

After all the New Year’s disptach drama, in February 2013, I photographed what looked to be casing replacements that Arlington City Officials called “routine maintenance”…geesh this looks non routine to me as I’ve never seen this kind of site activity before. I’ve only been hunting down urban gaswells for about 4 years now…

Ever since they did this maintenance, I haven’t had an issue with high Benzene (but we’ve been having windy days too). Its too bad this “maintenance” wasn’t taken care of years ago as the air monitor went online last September 0f 2012, and I believe they started drilling at UTArlington back in 2005 or 2006.

In conclusion,

TCEQ told me on 1/3/2013 that these high Benzene readings were coded in error and have been indentified as the “standard” that the operator was suppose to code as “ST” instead of the actual calibration reading. These high readings have since been removed and coded as either IQ, CS, ST, or BL.

Note that the City of Arlington’s Gas Well Inspectors do not oversee this padsite because it is a state owned entity…yet we breathe the air and pay taxes to keep these inspectors employed.

I’m feeling pretty good about my little rant over this padsite. It has been downwind to my family for over 7 years, and now my husband is being treated for cancer in his right neck lymph nodes and my teen continues to show elevated VMA levels which is one of the indicators of adrenal tumors….but hey I’m doing all I can, no one reading this blog cannot say I haven’t tried. But to finally see the air monitor at UTA “behave” is a good thang.

The real test to see if the recent maintenance and the Toxic Tank Babysitter job, is mitigating public health exposures will be when the winds stop blowing. You can be sure I’ll be looking at that monitor.

Buzz is that Arlington DOES NOT TEST DAILY for Fracking Effluents in Drinking Water Source

As I view our city’s 2012 Annual Drinking Water Quality Reporter and sit in disbelief at how high the Chloramines sit at an ave of 3.6 ppm when the Max Contamin Level is 4 ppm …(which makes NOT for taste test contests so I wonder how we continue to win and wonder if we are somehow sacrificing health for taste somewhere else?)…..Still haven’t heard a peep from the new Arlington Water Director, Buzz Pishkur, in my failed attempts to have him respond to my emails...I’m not surprised….they are instructed not to talk to me….I get the same treatment from our Arlington City Public Health Authority, Cynthia Simmons….

Below I’ve shared on my other blog site when I was running for City Council about my concern for what and when our city tests our drinking water source which is Lake Arlington.

It is worrisome that we have 100 laterals under our lake. It is also adjacent to numerous natural gas padsites on the Ft Worth side of the lake. Worse still is it is the dumping ground for the Handley Exelon Power Plant in the summer for hot water that kills the poor fish AND on top of that now there is a Natural Gas Compressor Station Complex (and probably gas wells too with nasty venting storage tanks) to the north of our water supply. Here is a reminder folks that Formaldehyde is not federally or state mandated to be tested for in drinking water.

Below you can read on the email exchange with our former water director, Julie Hunt. Notice how she did NOT respond to my question as to if Formaldehyde was being tested for. Formaldehyde and Carbon Disulfide are Natural Gas industry byproducts that have been found in exceedances at our Lake Arlington Compressor Station during the Titan, BSEEC industry funded air testing.

So I’ll again try to contact good old Buzz and see if the acid rain parameters of PH, Alkalinity, and Specific Conductivity would be off kilter in the presence of these chemicals….

1) Formaldehyde

2) Carbon Disulfide (note Methane and Sulfur react to form this)

3) Hydrochloric Acid – a staple to the drilling industry and

4) Acrylonitrile…note this EPA text that blatantly show the vulnerability of children…

“The death of a child (age 3) who was sleeping in a room fumigated with acrylonitrile has been described by Grunske (1949). Respiratory malfunction, lip cyanosis, and tachycardia were among the symptoms described prior to death. Five adults who spent the night and much of the day in the room complained only of eye irritation or showed no signs of acrylonitrile poisoning. The concentration of acrylonitrile in the air was not given. Several other instances of death in children with only mild irritation in adults were reported by Grunske (1949), but not described in detail.”

I now pick on Acrylonitrile because it was found in exceedances along with Formaldehyde & Benzene in the one million dollar FT Worth Air Study.

Below is the city’s response (and my rebuttal) on proactive measures for our surface drinking water now that we have 55 drilling pad sites. Lake Arlington is supplied via piped water from Cedar Creek & Richland Chambers Lake (drill site at road SE3170 adjacent to the lake sporting at least 5 wells and 10 tanks) over 80 miles away. Too bad her response doesn’t include anything about testing for the fracking chemicals used.

Ms Hunt, Thank you for your (partial) response. May I suggest that you add to your monitoring schedule for screening that coincides with Arlington and Ft Worth drill sites during their “active” times?

I’m not comfortable about a few things….

1) Disposal of produced fluids are evacuated daily at ALL of these sites. The monthly inspections at drill sites near Lake Arlington leave room for weeks of potentially contaminated drinking water that we consume daily.

2) Fracking chemicals aren’t being screen for. When flooding events occur (as in the Barron & Fulson drill site)….no one at the local, state or federal level did fracking chemical testing…just the usual turbidity, salinity, etc.

3) Specialty testing you referenced (such as metals, BTEX, MTBE and TOC) that is occurring quarterly leaves room for months of potentially contaminated drinking water that we consume daily.

I truly believe we need at least daily testing which should be funded either by the drillers or the Tomorrow Fund.

The City of Arlington is proactively monitoring for any impact from the gas wells on Lake Arlington. Water Department personnel are monitoring eight gas well sites adjacent to Lake Arlington and inspecting them monthly for any discharges from the sites. Samples are collected from Lake Arlington and tested quarterly for pollutants. Metals tested that are an indicator of pollution runoff from gas wells including arsenic, lead, chromium, barium, and mercury. Volatile organics that are tested as an indicator of pollution from diesel include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), Methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), and total organic carbon (TOC). Water quality indicators are tested as an indicator of acid rain that include pH, alkalinity, and specific conductivity. Regarding methanol, it is water soluable and is not a pollution indicator parameter. This proactive testing conducted regularly at Lake Arlington is closely monitored by our licensed professionals for any indication of contamination of our environment.

Subject: What is Arlington doing differently since drilling to better screen our surface water?

In general, can you make a statement about what Arlington is doing differently to be proactive in identifying if any drilling effluents are getting into the Lake or other reservoirs, storm run off, or fallout as acid rain?

For starters, how can we know if

methanol,

diesel, sulfuric acid,

or formaldehyde is being screened for?

I would like to see a drilling tab on the water dept. website with assurances and action plan to mitigate any surface risks these 55 padsites and moving trucks hazards present.

Are you familiar with fracfocus.org? Will you follow suit like the fire department to ask council to approve fees to drillers to fund the additional testing we need to have to assure public safety of our surface drinking water?

During public comment for the budget, mayor Cluck interrupted my comments and I ran out of time and wanted to address the need for our water department to ramp up what they test for.

As a home rule city, we have the ability to be more stringent than the state and federal government.

“So why do you lead in approving gaswells in Arlington?

Why do you give GM incentatives (tax breaks) to muck up our air AND put gaswells on their properties?

In 2011, GM had 657 tons per year of contaminants reported to TCEQ which by the way equates to 5,211 pounds of ozone per day. GM does not include the pollution from the Chesapeake padsites on their state annual emissions inventory.

You support unregulated, multiple, cummulative emissions wafting in our Entertainment District.”

Cluck also was the tipping vote to put up to ten more gaswells within 400 feet of a daycare…this guy has no spine, is souless, and sought and won re-election recently…how pathetic R our voters!
