Fascinating ERG air study info on Methane losses in Ft Worth

UPDATE June 2016 one of the two MAIN pieces of equipment ERG used in the ONE MILLION DOLLAR Ft Worth Barnett Shale air study may have been under-reporting methane!!!!! DEMAND A DO OVER ON THAT TESTING!!!!!!!!

end update——-

UPDATE 11/26/2013  Cows, refineries, drilling spew 50% more gas than feds estimate, study says.

————————

The ERG Ft Worth air study representatives reported during the citizen briefing that Ft Worth has from 2 ½ to 5 times more methane than the world wide background average.

I take issue in that with heat or sunlight, Methane reacts with halogens like chlorine. These chlorinated hydrocarbons are dangerous to our liver, kidneys and central nervous system.  My notes showed….

1).They were not tasked to report on the topic of the huge methane losses while my handwritten notes show that Ft Worth has 5-10 ppm methane when the world wide background average is 2 ppm). Royalty owners should be upset about that as should the Railroad Commission because it is their duty to preserve our state’s natural resources.
2).They also were not asked to make any health recommendations about drilling trucks and onsite engines creating NOX which fuels our ozone noncompliance air quality problems.
3). A question was raised if they had data regarding emissions during a drilling fire or mishap, but they did not have any information on that.

The ERG study rep admitted directy to me that they could never address the numerous combinations of reactive mixtures.

Ft Worth averaged almost 21,000 tons of methane losses per year which was only 20 times less than the total methane losses from the BP Gulf coast disaster. This tells me that we can improve on NOT allowing methane to escape to the atmosphere (which is a potent green house gas). Through self policing, the industry has demonstrated a callous disregard for our minerals by their inaction to employ Best Available Emission Control Technologies. They are short changing our valuable state resources that the Rail Road Commission had a duty to protect and have failed in that job area.

In 2009 inTexas, 96 percent of the 80,000 violations by oil and gas drillers resulted in NO enforcement action. The Rail Road Commission received 681 complaints that resulted in the discovery of almost 2,000 violations. Again, 96 percent resulted in NO enforcement action.

If we have to endure the negatives of co-existing with urban drilling, we need to know that our local government has mandates in our ordinance for the drillers to use current technology to recover and meter OUR methane during the fracking and flowback stages of preproduction so my royalty checks on my properties can be the economic boost that we were promised.

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
