Our City Council Risks the Tomorrow Funds in Minerals Mismanagement

The public hearing is closed on the Truman/Cowboy Stadium agenda item for two more gas wells.

The “Bobcat” well was approved last year at the corner of Collins and Division street and is scheduled to be drilled next month. If council would have tabeled this vote, they would have had the opportunity to understand traffic and air quality issues with drilling near our entertainment, historic, and downtown business district.

Now Chesapeake does not have the contractual legal ability to enact a Force Majeure delay. This would’ve allowed all parties involved to enjoy higher pay offs if the price of natural gas goes back up because the first year or two of production is the most profitable. The timing of the production of the minerals is critical to optimizing royalty checks for the city owned land and for the local church’s minerals. It would benefit all involved if Chesapeake drills when it is most economical for them so they are not under the pressure of a contract deadline.

If Chesapeake chooses to drill and defer production, that would mean they would have to pay “well shut in checks” for those who have that written into their contract.

It is a sad day indeed in understanding the depths of dispair that drilling brings to neighborhoods when the only chance I ever had to try to stop these wells related NOT to the health and safety of those nearby, but rather appealing to the pocketbooks of the mineral owners.

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
