The comments on the NY Times article “How to Extract Gas Responsibly” by Gudrun from Independence, NY deserves to be blogged….. “Shale rock contains uranium and is found by the Geiger counter ticking. Uranium produces radioactive radon gas which is likely also to be liberated from fracking along with the methane. Industry has not revealed the radon level at the wellhead getting a ride with the methane.
Using the gas immediately will mean radon gas has not decayed – half life is 3.9 days. Radon gas will not burn and is inert chemically. Radon gas will be piped into NYC with the SPECTRA pipeline that will fasttrack the methane into the cities kitchen stoves – the worst room in the house- radon progeny will land on the food and be inhaled by the cook leaning over the stove as the food is cooking…
Radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer death after smoking and there has not been a assessment how much more lung cancer will be caused by using methane at the wellhead immediately for petrochemical industry or piping it quickly into the large customer base such as NYC — Mayor Bloomberg are you listening?
Radon gas and its progeny can be filtered out of the gas by storing it in a sandstone depleated gas storage fields for a couple of weeks and these fields are plentyful in Pa and NY.
However that is never discussed because the specialists think the public does not know about it and why raise an issue that people don’t know about – never mind that we pay these specialists to think around corners.”
