Perr / Fannin drilling plans / BENZENE in ALL NG extraction phases

While Arlington approves new drill zone, neighbors in Mansfield lament over a fossil fuel fired lift compressor.  Arlington only allows “electric” compression (once these wells peter out after 12-18 months). The electric lift compressors and compressor stations (one at Eden/Harris and the DWG one across from Camp Thurmon) has its problems too in “emission events “during monthly maintenance and when we have black outs.. Just know that even if they say they direct the stuff (raw gasses) in the pipes to the storage tanks (verses straight into the air), that the storage tanks do not have vapor recovery devices and silently, invisibly vent into the air-shed 24/7. Here is an infrared video at Lake Arlington’s compressor station’s storage tanks venting hydrocarbons.

UPDATE>>>>2825 S Cooper has a new drilling zone as of council vote on 10/28/14

P&Z denied this last month (here is the blog link with videos) and council voted to hear & approve the case anyway…YOU didn’t show up and fight, & they approved this expansion project in the MEDICAL DISTRICT AIRSHED.

UPDATE P&Z tabled continued agaain as requested by Enervest for the Fannin Farms Drillzone…they did allow speakers however and take a listen to these four people. Bradley Evans of 6709 Rickey Lane-about 500 ft away (as pictured above at the red balloon & is said to be asking $1,000,000 to get his signature to be that close) and Brenda Roper of 7022 Park Green is less than 500 feet away. These two were the only neighbors. Jane Lynn and I spoke. Jane spoke on notifications and seismicity, and I spoke on open hatch flowback tanks, storage tank emissions, blowdowns, the Denton fracking ban, and health risks.

B  E  N  Z  E  N  E  ….Public Integrity recently uncovered OLD ‘incriminating to the petroleum industry’ info here. Since it is a long read, I picked out some read bites that grabbed me that I boldfaced for my emphasis…

“The petrochemical industry has known about benzene’s dangers since the turn of the last century. As far back as 1948, the API’s toxicological profile of the chemical discussed “reasonably well documented instances of the development of leukemia as a result of chronic benzene exposure,” cautioning that “the only absolutely safe concentration … is zero.”

“The conspiracy exists, and the conspiracy involves hiding the true hazards of benzene at low doses,” said Robert Black, a Houston lawyer who represents plaintiffs in toxic tort cases. Since 2004, while handling dozens of lawsuits filed on behalf of workers sickened by leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases associated with benzene, Black has obtained 16,000 pages of internal records detailing the industry’s research tactics, which he shared with the Center. Other lawyers provided an additional 5,000 pages.”

“In 2004, the NCI released the results of a second study. It found that Chinese shoe makers inhaling benzene in amounts below the OSHA limit had fewer white blood cells than unexposed workers, suggesting the chemical has no safe threshold.”

Oil and chemical companies have long seeded the scientific literature, paying consultants to publish in peer-reviewed journals. They often use the published articles to advance their positions in regulatory and legal arenas. Infante, the former OSHA official, considers benzene “a good example of how the general scientific literature is being polluted by people working for industry.”

“…fueling appeals on both sides, and sparking a brief signed by 27 preeminent scientists affirming benzene can cause any leukemia.”

“There’s obvious vested interest here,” Bowers said of the Shanghai study. “If oil companies are willing to spend $36 million to fund research, how much are they afraid of losing?

Benzene is in ALL the phases of Natural Gas Extraction.  Babies are found to have higher birth defects near drilling too.”

Click here to see that the City of Arlington has MSDS sheets for Benzene that Chesapeake uses during the DRILLING STAGE …

  • Click here to read how they use Benzene during FRACKING STAGE
  • Click here to see how Benzene amounts are dangerous to the workers exposed to the waste during the FLOWBACK STAGE.
  • Click here to learn how that waste driven to INJECTION WELLS have Phenol (a major metabolite of Benzene) had 93 million pounds injected in TX in 2011.
  • Click here to read coverage of flaring in the Eagleford and its Benzene exposures during that process.

Keep in mind that one teaspoon of Benzene contaminates about 261,000 gallons of water

And so through cracks in the casing they are finding how the methane races up into the water wells. Unknown is if the other toxins like Benzene will later take the same route.

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
