4/2015 LABC uncontrolled well-was there room to drill URBAN relief well? 2012 warning not responded to either

January 3 2016 update…now that there is an uncontrolled gas leak in California getting national attention (since discovered on 10/23/15….relief well being drilled and could take months)…..I’d like to revisit the 2012 & 2015 UNANSWERED QUESTION to our city officials of which URBAN drill sites in Arlington TX would NOT have enough room to drill a relief well in a worst case scenario? #thoseNeedPluggingPermanentlyYall

end update-Below is a diary of communications leading up (to the preventable?), and during the LABC well control event. But first I’d like to feature the FB snippets of the casual attitude of church members on this potentially catastrophic event.

Want more info/vids/picture/letters/etc… on the LABC Vantage Energy well loss control event?….click here.

UPDATE …here are some FB posts on one church member’s description of frack leak event/evacuation as “unforeseen circumstances”.

Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.39.15 AM Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.39.47 AM The next FB post originated from John Hibbs …it was stunning that people didn’t seem concerned about this ALMOST worst case scenario with Boots & Coots making several attempts to plug the well with mud and…they got really close to all that UNCONTROLLED gas that was to follow the UNCONTROLLED TOXIC water that was flowing and flowing….and flowing.  Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.40.55 AM Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.41.15 AM Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.41.33 AM And here were the “likes-but no comment”…Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 7.41.49 AM

Here is John Hibbs email response to me (a year before the accident at his church) when he was an AISD board member-he defended the industry/city on my concerns of risks…karma hah!

End update

Click here to read about a relief well dug in California’s Bellevue #1 wildcat well in 1998 in Kern County….

“When water began flowing with the gas on the 16th day, the well finally snuffed the fire out by itselfan uncontrolled mixture of gas, However, condensate and water continued to flow for another six months. Finally, drillers were able to interceptthe well bore of the blowout at 16,600 feet with a deviated relief well drilled from several hundred yards away. Then the gusher was “killed” on May 28 using drilling fluid (mud) with a density of 17 lb/gal.”

Subject: So what is plan B if next time Boots & Coots has to drill a relief well-do we have the space in Urban Drilling?
Dallas Morning News had an editorial and I commented this…
“The leak could have caused the loss of life and property, the release of unhealthy chemicals into the air or into nearby Lake Arlington, a source of the city’s drinking water. Thankfully, there are no indications any of that came to pass” No indications? of course the damage would be hidden under the earth and the surface spill may have already been running off into Lake Arlington during the rains…A last resort for the remediation company, Boots & Coots, would have been to drill a relief well. I understand that needs to be perpendicular …..in Urban Drilling we don’t have that spacing-homes may be there…imagine leveling a home to drill a relief well? In 2012 I asked our AFD to comment on the spacing needs, but they never provided me with any feedback.

Subject: What run off risk is it to Lake Arlington now that it is raining after the LABC frack spill incident?

Are we testing for frack chemicals? I know the answer is no, but please share technical information as to what markers or sensors we use as the water comes to the intake at the treatment plant to detect effluents such as what we fear might be running off into our lake?
In Caddo LA about 5 years ago 17 cattle died from drinking a small amt of frack fluid run off mixed with rain water after a storm. Six months later more cattle died after a rainstorm to the Wilfong family near Mineral Wells. This stuff is highly toxic.
We suspected there was a problem at the LABC site months ago as phone conversations with residents and the drillers conflicted with what the city said was not happening: a problem. Even if Fish Creek would have released this letter to the public or media a month ago, would this have made a difference in the blow out? A group of LiveableArlington citizens met and there was knowledge of “information” that Fish Creek was sitting on, but honestly who would have acted to shut them down earlier? Not the city-they bend over every chance they get to let the drillers have their way, not the state-they don’t interfere, and the EPA defers to the state. And after tomorrow’s HB40 vote to take away local control of these drill sites, its too little too late. When the city of Arlington had local control-they never used it, now that they might lose local control..they act all perky like they actually care about protecting the citizens…just a farse-just a farse.
UPDATE 2:45 4/12/2015 AFD says the well is under control (24 hours later) and the evacuations have been lifted-let the law suits begin. Watch that they test the soil because any runoff could be a cow killer?

UPDATE  2:19 Arlington Voice reported positive progress to plug well-waiting for hard confirmation.

UPDATE 2pm 4/12/2015 I PREDICT THEY MAY NEED TO DRILL A RELIEF WELL AND THERE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH ROOM BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE POSITIONED IN SUCH A WAY…READ HERE. and note that our AFD NEVER responded on this concern that I had/have about space for relief wells in urban tight drilling padsites.

UPDATE 4/12/2015 LABC held church services in the Martin High auditorium-well still out of control-evacuations voluntary for 1/8 mile now.

UPDATE 4/11/2015 a fracking well blow out is in progress that started with 13 household evacuation. The neighbors suspected back in January that something was wrong. I wonder if the fluid is top flow fracking fluid that is flowing back fluid? I’d prefer it be later stage of flowback type water which is called produced water and doesn’t have madmade chemicals that they use to frack the wells with. Those chemicals were said to have killed 17 cows in Caddo parish in Louisiana when a rainstorm overflowed a drill site area the cows drank what is said to have been rainwater with 1 or 2% fracking fluid.

LABC has a gas leak – I’m told they can’t find it/not happening…must be “NORMAL OPERATIONS” note sarcasm
UPDATE 2/19/2015 here is a photo of frack sand containers..I guess fracking is soon to happen near all these people.

UPDATE 1/17/15  While the city denies a leak, two citizens have spoken directly with the company reps at Vantage Energy and was told there may be a crack in the casing. At last Tuesday’s City Council meeting on Jan 13, 2015 , there was a man living 85 ft away from that gaswell site at the Lake Arlington Baptist Church property. He told council of a trust issue because he contacted them in July 2014 to see if they were planning anymore wells and they said no…come September they drilled 10 wells. That testimony was during Citizen Participation so of course there is no footage on record of this.

Regarding the LABC (Lake Arlington Baptist Church) drill site  this is the message I received on 1/7/15 “...a few days ago there was a major leak.  They are still working around the clock to find the leak.”
UPDATE 1/8/15  A Facebook friend called the city and they told them that there IS no leak so this FB friend drove by and reported  that the site is really active and that they may be now into the fracking stage of those ten wells. They said that “the drill rig came down 3 weeks ago. TCEQ said fracking shouldn’t cause a gas leak unless there’s a major problem. She said if there’s a gas leak it could be from one of the previous existing wells”. Then I said they call that “communication with the formation”,  it happened in Pantego TX at the Carrizo (now EnerVest) site by my son’s junior high. That type of communication was with the formation waters in that event…procedurally the drillers shut in the other wells in the area when they drill new wells….not sure if the LABC older wells were shut in.
So this LABC complaint that was shared with me could be YET ANOTHER case of
Heres a snapshot of part of the FB string with the person who drove by the site …be sure to catch the part below where the person living across from the LABC site has since moved in with parents due to

Thank you for contacting me…I had a rushed response that I sent to council before I had to run off to work tonight.

I went back to one of my password protected LABC blogs and made it public and feel bad that you made your biggest investment (a home) in a horrible place that should have been safe had it not be for greedy people thinking that industry can mix with residential…

Please come to the 1/13 meeting to ask council to deny the Perr drill site near California and Cooper…and then at the end of the meeting you can address council on the LABC site-you only get two minutes and it is no longer televised-they don’t want citizens going on video archive record complaining about gas wells. That I feel is why they try to have as few gas well agenda items as possible (administratively approving wells via drilling zones).

Please keep me in the loop on the status of the leak…is it making noise? Does it have an odor? R U directly downwind?

Subject: Gas Leak at LABC Drill Site

Good afternoon,

I hope this message finds you in good spirits.  I read some of your blog information today and it certainly proved helpful.  I reside directly across the street from the LABC site, where just a few days ago there was a major leak.  They are still working around the clock to find the leak.  I bought my house from the  previous owner without the knowledge that drilling was to begin soon a few years ago, and it has been a roller coaster ever sense.  I have honestly done my best to ignore the situation and not let it stress me out, but now I am thinking this may not be the best place to raise a family.

In your efforts to educate the community further, please feel free to contact me (email is best).  I would even be willing to speak at council meetings, etc.  Thanks for what you have done, please know it does matter.

Subject: Fw: Gas Leak at LABC Drill Site / Viridian reps not excited about drill zone expansion
  • Our next council meeting is January 13 where you are to vote on three gaswells for the Perr drillsite. Aside from all the earthquakes, and aside from how you ignored the Entertainment District odor event of 1/30-31 in 2013 (which I filed a suit against Chk yesterday),  you now have the Lake Arlington Baptist Church site with families regretting they ever moved to Arlington.
Here is some more info you can chose to ignore (or not) about what people say about my blog…
A UTArlington teacher shared with me recently that they chose to live in Irving because they found my blog warning them not to move to Arlington. The other thing is that Councilman Rivera commended me for citing all the references in my blog.

Now contrast that with Charlie Parker, my councilman, who will not even acknowledge my emails. I deserve better than that. So listen carefully …….

You should feel fortunate that your revisions to our gas drilling ordinance gives the city an “out” to expand any new drilling.
Originally, having the drillers reapply for their Special Use Permit by calling it an “application for a Drilling Zone” was to in essence fast track wells administratively so council did not have to listen to me drone on at each meeting for each permit at each drill site….am I correct?
But at the same time having to make them reapply for the drilling zone does not allow new drilling at those padsites …SO USE YOUR AUTHORITY TO EMPLOY THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE AND DO NOT APPROVE ANYMORE DRILLING ZONES PERIOD.
If you take my advice, it still doesn’t help the Truman site near the Cowboys Stadium because you already approved that drill zone as well as the Rocking Horse drill zone by the daycare ….those two were the worst ones to have first approved…. you get what you deserve.
Mel Leblanc, my former councilman, once taunted me in an email saying “…infact I’ll see to it that yours is one of the first drill zones approved”…I’ll say it again…one day those stadiums will be packed and one of those drill sites either by GM or Truman will have an emission or explosive event and evacuations will be impossible.
Council once said at a day session that they wouldn’t approve drill sites close to large gathering places but your words are shallow.  Also I once heard council say they would make the drillers work together so the pad sites would not be close to each other, but you couldn’t make that happen for the Perr site cause Chesapeake is on the Perr fenceline …NEAR THE MEDICAL DISTRICT!
So now the vote is in your court to turn EnerVest down for those wells at the Perr site at your next meeting on 1/13/15.  You have the power to use your “out”…let it be your idea to curtail urban drilling (the failed experiment) …. don’t wait for the citizens to force a ban on the ballot cause I guarantee you that is next on MY agenda.

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
