2007 PM 2.5 Pollution uptick CORRELATES w/number of fracking wells drilled

I know I’m supposed to be blogging on Arlington TX matters…but this could help us in our quest to learn about fracking’s risk for ground water contamination, air pollution, and frackquakes too.

Oil & Gas Journal reported that Kerns (county/San Joaquin Valley) is where the majority of fracking has occurred in California…

Oil & Gas Journal said ….”California, which (fracking) tends to be performed in shallower wells that are vertical as opposed to horizontal and requires much less water per well.”

My thought process is that if they are fracking in shallower wells AND near Kerns River, that if testing for fracking water pollution comes up clean (using the newfound Duke University tracers), then maybe I’ll stop buying that VOSS Water from Norway and trust my Arlington, (home filtered) tap.

But alas will they now need to parse out any of the polluted ground water thats been in the news where injection wells accidentally was dumping into “suitable” for drinking ground water .

So I emailed California Assembly member, Shannon Grove, asking for the water testing, but as usual I expect no response (from leaders in general) on my request for her to get that Kern River frack tested….

The reason I’m picking on Ms. Shannon is that I found where KQED has a news audio interview with her on a story….

Open Arms Greet Fracking in Kern County

“The fracking that we’re using here in Kern County is on old wells. I mean they’re all mature wells,” she said. “This field has been operating on the Kern River for almost a hundred years. And it’s, there’s no river contamination. And the bottom line is it’s safe…”.

It is obvious she subscribes to the same Kool-aid (Fool-aid) that our Arlington City Council does…money talks…health issues/risks…well they …just~don’t~matter.

So in anticipation of the Kool/Fool-aid Grove lady to NOT want to test Kern River, I emailed…

Hello, I found that you are on the CCST steering committee  and just wanted to be sure you knew about the newest Duke Univ related tracers to differentiate traditional conventional drilling pollution from the unconventional fracing pollution using Boron, Lithium, and Helium.

“Duke University geochemist, Avner Vengosh, and Dartmouth’s Nathaniel Warner teamed up with French researchers to utilize tracers of boron and lithium that occur naturally in shale formations that unite with frac fluid and have distinctive isotopic fingerprints that are different from other types of wastewater”. ‘
Specifically a water test of the Kern River for these isotopes would be in order.
Thanks.

Wikipedia has an air pollution chart for Bakersfield, which is a town at the south end of Kern County’s San Joaquin Valley.

Note a distinct increase starting in 2007….

Now note the recently released study chart from”The California Council on Science & Technology” has a similar uptick ALSO starting in 2007…

So there I have my answer to the air pollution question…albeit was a no brainer in the first place.

As for the frackquakes, here is one more chart from the California new “Part 1 of a 3 part” study….

I emailed a UT Arlington student leader asking for him to look at quakes in the Kern area. I found this UT Arlington contact from the student organizations page (whose link no longer works) under the name “Earthquake Engineering Research Institute”.  Maybe I’ll hear back?…

Bakersfield in Kern county--twould be good to know if uptick in earthquakes since advent of fracking verses conventional wells.
Will your dept. be looking into the possible causes for the Irving/Arlington earthquakes? If so can I be put on a contact list of your research findings?
Thanks

Kim

To get the answers to some of my questions, I guess I have to wait for a study to be released in July 2015.  The majority of the research was done by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  Mark yer calendar to check back on this blog post for an update.

FOOF 4 THOUGHT>>>>my husband pointed out that San Joaquin Valley is where we get our food from…yep…thats over a $100 billion dollar industry annually…..nasty particulates!
Thanks for reading.
Now for VOC’s part in creating ozone by Michael Come…

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
