WFAA Brett Shipp Coverage on T W O fracking spills at Lake Arlington Baptist Church LABC drill site

February 11, 2016 update…on a TCEQ investigation in December 2015 during flowback, TCEQ stated that Vantage has NO compliance history and a performance classification as “high” (like an A+ in school)…..that bites!  TCEQ has all customers at high until they nab them with a violation…and so the two spill in 2015, one of which was a well control event that caused the evacuation and extreme response efforts from the city and Boot & Coots to kill the well…..no violation was found by TCEQ…lovely….just fracking lovely! TCEQ=FAIL…

June 25, 2015 update as today is the restart date of Vantage operations at the LABC site…I asked for follow up on a January alleged casing leak event(s) and the city’s response is at the bottom string of emails on this blog post.

Check back for an update on the THIRD alleged spill/release (and or casing leak) that was said to have happened at LABC in early January 2015 (see letter at the end of this blog)

Here is the document that was handed to me in the hall after I asked which well was affected in the March spill. Brett Shipp interjected that they (AFD?…the public?) wouldn’t have even known about (the first spill) had WFAA not requested all the PIR’s…

In January and February of 2015, the LABC site had some issues that may have been related to these spills as least one Arlington resident was in phone contact with Vantage workers who confided that there was a casing issue…when quizzed Arlington officials, there was either denial or no knowledge of alleged casing leaks.

I tried to get the LABC church staff to take an active role to defend the neighborhood and their ministry back in October, 2014 and then again in January of 2015, but no one from the church followed up with me on any of my letters..

Please come to the next City Council meeting (101 W Abram 1/13/15) to speak against the 3 wells being permitted at the Perr drill site (at California and Cooper). And then speak again at the end during citizen participation on your LABC site.

Ask council to take the Precautionary Principle and deny any more drilling zones in Arlington, thank you.

Here is the complaint I received on the ongoing gas leak near your church…

Subject: Gas Leak at LABC Drill Site

Good afternoon,

I hope this message finds you in good spirits.  I read some of your blog information today and it certainly proved helpful.  I reside directly across the street from the LABC site, where just a few days ago there was a major leak.  They are still working around the clock to find the leak.  I bought my house from the  previous owner without the knowledge that drilling was to begin soon a few years ago, and it has been a roller coaster ever sense.  I have honestly done my best to ignore the situation and not let it stress me out, but now I am thinking this may not be the best place to raise a family.

In your efforts to educate the community further, please feel free to contact me (email is best).  I would even be willing to speak at council meetings, etc.  Thanks for what you have done, please know it does matter.

Sincerely,
XXX

Ms. Feil,

During the time you referenced, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) was contacted due to a citizen concern over an alleged casing leak.  The TCEQ conducted an investigation and concluded that there was no casing leak.  There was also no 911 call associated with the LABC site received during that time.    A timeline of activity was requested by the State during their investigation and the log is located below.  Please contact me if you have any other questions.

Subject: Gas Leak at LABC Drill Site early Jan 2015 leak/Shahzad example why we need Citizen Participation recorded
So thanks to WFAA reporter, Brett Shipp, we know about the LABC April 11 AND MARCH 10th frack fluid leaks. But back in January 2015, Shahzad reached out to me about another leak of some type and I encouraged him to speak to council during BOTH the Perr drill site hearings and during citizen participation. WHo can follow up on the early January emission event(s)?
I did a PIR for his content on what he said to council during Citizen Participation and only received a jpg of the speaker card he signed. Are public meetings mandated to be recorded by law? Once the gavel hits the desk…the meeting is over.
…anyway this email today is for a two fold purpose…
1) to get Collin to request Vantage to give the city any information on an alleged January release event(s) that Shahzad spoke to council about. Sharon Sims Belvins also spoke to the drillers and to me about said that Vantage admitted to having a casing leak they were having trouble finding…we want to know which well that was on and if IT ever was corrected!!! (BTW Sharon’s leukemia came back and she is at MD Anderson fighting for her life as I type this) but the city has no records of a January leak being reported by the driller to them from what I’m told.
2) to have Mayor Williams continue to push to have recorded citizen participation so we have a complete record.
Thank you Collin for following up on which well in January had a casing leak. We certainly don’t want a repeat evacuation event at LABC when they turn on those wells again…or maybe we do?…another BIG event could help the PR campaign to help get us off of fossil fuels…I can see the headlines now….

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
