Exacting a cause for my nosebleed from a Pasadena refinery upset event

UPDATE 7/26/16 9am I just got off the phone with TCEQ and filed a formal complaint about my nosebleed and being worried this exposure event may trigger future nosebleeds. I was told I was the only one who called this in and as of this morning no other complaints have been filed on the Pasadena upset/plume releases  of 7/25/16 following the bad weather event. I did contact the refinery on line and posted my blog and told them this caused my nosebleed. More people need to call TCEQ (not that they can come out right away and do an air test) –end update—

Having driven through bad weather, we drove up to the Super 8 motel at 5550 Homestead in Houston around 4:20 pm on July 25, 2016 into what looked and smelled like fireworks fallout that linger from hell.

super8Our parking lot at the motel was enveloped in a cloud of sulfur smelling acrid air. My husband said you didn’t notice that black plume of smoke behind the dark rain clouds during the rain storm driving to the motel?

I made two trips to the room gathering my luggage from my car, on my second trip I noticed my nose dripping and wiped my nose with my white tee shirt. With the third drip and convenient tee shirt wipe, I was inside the room and staring in the mirror in awe of a nose bleed and caught my “ah ha” moment of what exactly caused “this” nose bleed.

I called the front desk of the motel who called me back admitting something indeed was going on outside. I called TCEQ (who had no refinery upset reports and would come out tomorrow and investigate), and I called 911 for faster service in finding out what we were breathing. By the time the fire department arrived the smoke had cleared; they mentioned that there was a fire about 20 miles away but did not say it was refinery related.

This morning I found out that indeed there was a refinery release at the Pasadena refinery 8 miles away.

So now I wonder if I will have more nose bleeds like the chronic ones of 2015 following the addition of two lift compressors near my home in Arlington by the ATT Stadium. In December 2015, I had to have  an emergency nasal cauterization and it worked….. until my trip to Houston.

The refinery is required to report the upset to the  county emergency response, state (TCEQ) and if a large enough release, to the National Response Center.

The  lockdown is ordered by the county emergecy response.  Perhaps the person with TCEQ that you spoke to was not in the notification loop.

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
