Chesapeake Frack FAIL response to minimize diesel use and Endocrine Disruptions by Cowboys Stadium

Video taken on 11/29/12 –

The technolgy is available to take “field natural gas” and make it the feedstock to run the engines on to replace nasty DIESEL during the fracking stage.…well it’s about fracking time!  Funny this is only now “feasible” once the drillers recognize its cheaper to use “abundant natual gas” – which should also help with the gas glut issue too!!  Now to make sure this gets implimented right away for my family’s, and my neighborhood’s, and MY ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT’S SAKE! But alas here is Chesapeake’s response…

Subject: RE: Julie, need your help in asking your contractor for Truman site near Cowboy Stadium to use natural gas frack technology-less visible diesel plumes-

Kim –

We would love for everything to run on natural gas …  drilling rigs, fracturing crews, 18-wheelers, cherry-pickers, tractors, bulldozers, mail trucks, lawnmowers and, yes, kitchen stoves.  And we’re working hard toward that end!  Unfortunately, all the necessary infrastructure isn’t there just yet, and will not likely be in place by the time the next well at the stadium site is hydraulically fractured.  It isn’t on the schedule yet, so I can’t tell you the timeframe, but I know you keep a close eye on our AskChesapeake Neighborhood Center. When we get it scheduled, we’ll post it there.

Thanks for your interest and ongoing concern for the environment. Have a good day.

Julie

Here is a link with more info on using natural gas as fuel to frack with….

Bahorich said, This is a real trend and it’s happening now. We’re witnessing a sea change in the industry that will have a great impact not only on how much less oil is imported but also will help keep our air clean.”

I have stressed that Chesapeake can be a leader in how they do urban drilling-  this sounds like a win win in that it is more cost effective to use cheaper NG than diesel…

Here is yet another example of Chesapeake and the city failing to control emissions during the flowback process, but first a crash course on the difference between urban frack ponds verses rual waste pits….
The City of Arlington $ells their water from our hydrants through the sales meter and it goes into the “fresh water frack pond” so the trucks don’t have to haul it in which reduces truck traffic (and pollution)…they call the ponds an “amenity” and they serve the purpose of drawing water to mix with sand and chemicals to frack with. Then a decade later or so it goes away.  The ducks like it, and supposedly they treat these fresh water frack ponds so the mosquitoes don’t flourish…these frack ponds are very different from the rural “open pits”  H O W E V E R, during the first stage of urban flowback, (before they try to complete the wells), they flow back into OPEN HATCH flowback tanks which serves the very same purpose as rural open pits which is to vent the VOC’s. The EPA missed regulating this stage of flowback. It was not addressed on the New Source Performance Standards which was a recently enacted set of rules to regulate Green House Gasses due to the warming climate.

If Chesapeake was interested in drilling right in Arlington, they would flowback into, ventless, pressurized “closed hatch” flowback tanks, but haven’t moved to do this (as repeatedly requested with zero response)  since they are cash strapped. Chesapeake expects that the City of Arlington will not enforce our *ordinance to make them use emission reduction devices.
Now once the drillers detect the right ratio of liquids to gas during flowback, they will shut in the well until the pipeline is ready and then they will “GREEN complete” the well. A green completion is when the contents of the well go through the separators that sends the
1) liquids to the produced water storage tanks (instead of open hatch flowback tanks that spew VOC’s into the neighborhoods),
2) the sand to the sand tanks, and
3) the (now saleable) gas through the salesmeter which goes into the pipeline and off to be sold.
Arlington is not enforcing their ordinance to mandate Chesapeake to use best available emission control devices…our Gas Drilling Ordinance ONLY expects them to use what is industry standard which reflects rural drilling standards. We do not even mandate “green completions” because per Jim Parajon, our City Planner, said “it is not needed to be in our gas drilling ordinance because it is industry standard”.
It is a no brainer that the industry hand wrote our ordinance?
*gas drilling ordinance VII 7.01 A6 … minimize,so far as practicable, dust, vibration or noxious odors, and shall be in accordance with the best accepted practices incident to drill for the production of gas and other hydrocarbon substances in urban areas. All equipment used shall be so constructed and operated so that vibrations, dust, odor or other harmful or annoying substances or effect will be minimized by the operations carried on at any drilling or production site or from anything incident thereto, to the injury or annoyance of persons living in the vicinity;….Proven technological improvements in  industry standards of drilling and production in this area shall be adopted as they become available if capable of reducing factors of dust, vibration and odor……”

What is Endocrine Disruption?…..

Below is more City of Arlington drama in my attempts to get my family away from the intensive drilling/fracking/flowback and workover phases…but to do that, I need to know “when” so I can check the “wind’s direction”,  but the communciation piece with the city and Chesapeake is in FAIL mode so far…..

W A R N I N G :  A RESPIRATOR IS ADVISED IF YOU PLAN TO SIT AT THE RED LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF DIVISION AND COLLINS OR  AT THE INTERSECTION OF ABRAM AND COLLINS BECAUSE FLOWBACK IS HAPPENING AS I TYPE THIS AND THE WINDS ARE OUT OF THE NORTH! Tomorrow, 12/5, the winds will change and I will need to leave the area while they finish up flowing back the last well by the Cowboy Stadium.

Update…I was told by Jim Parajon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6cSg0Fi0jk that flowback on the last well was to start instead on Dec 6, 2012, but periodic checks driving on Collins shows no activity….I’m still in the dark and my Chesapeake contact will not return my calls, and still I watch the winds…just in case they do flowback.

Urban drilling = fail on notification of high activity, high pollution times for those that are aware they should be watching the winds and remove themselves from harms way.

I learned that flowback on the first two Cowboy Stadium gas wells happened Oct 17, 18 and 19th-I wasn’t notified, and the city website was NOT updated I was livid when I found out and happened to be recording when I learned of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKN_PvNFWW0

On Friday, 10/19/2012, Joe Bruner and Lindy, from the Arlington Downtown Farmers Market, are witnesses to the odors and my complaints of  odors from 8 am to 1pm on Friday, October 19th, which was my last day to volunteer there due to the rig being up when I got home-I was furious and told Joe that I was not working Saturday because of the presence of the (workover) rig. So I’m not even sure if they flowed back on the dates I was given due to the presence of a workover rig.

I specifically asked and was promised a heads up on when the flowback would be occurring. Collin Greggory verified that ventless, urban flowback tanks were NOT used…I have a call in to Senator Davis’ office. (UPDATE-no response there)

Whoever thought Urban Drilling was safe did not research where toxicology meets endocrinology. In studying the effects of BPA’s and Atrazine, it has been found that health effects can be significant in low doses that are “legal” per old school Effect Screening Levels (ESL) standards.

Our Arlington TX fire dept. looks at parts per million to make sure we don’t blow up.

The state and feds look at parts per billion to see if (antiquated) Effect Screening Levels were violated.

Who is looking at PARTS PER TRILLION?

We do not have to wait decades to protect citizens like we did to get the truth with the cigarette industry…..DEMAND NEW LAWS THIS LEGLISLATIVE SESSION TO PROHIBIT URBAN DRILLING….or at least mandate the use of the Best Emission Control Technologies!

About Kim Triolo Feil

Since TX Statute 253.005 forbids drilling in heavily settled municipalities, I unsuccessfully ran for City Council Seat to try to enforce this. Since Urban Drilling, our drinking water has almost tripled for TTHM's. Before moving to Arlington in 1990, I lived in Norco’s “cancer alley”, a refinery town. It was only after Urban Drilling in Arlington did I start having health effects. After our drill site was established closest to my home, the chronic nosebleeds started. I know there are more canaries here in Arlington having reactions to our industrialized airshed (we have 55-60 padsites of gas wells). Come forward and report to me those having health issues especially if you live to the north/northwest of a drill site so I can map your health effects on this blog.
